Puri: A shocking incident of alleged caste-based discrimination has come to light from the Kanas area in Odisha’s Puri district, where a Dalit woman was reportedly denied access to drinking water and allegedly assaulted by some villagers.

The incident was reported from Karmala village under Gadisagoda police limits. According to the complaint, the woman had gone to a local matha to fetch drinking water when some villagers allegedly stopped her, claiming that the place would become impure if she entered.

The accused persons allegedly shut the gate of the matha and prevented her from collecting water. When the woman protested, she was reportedly abused with casteist remarks and physically assaulted.

A video of the incident has surfaced on social media and gone viral.

The victim has lodged a complaint at the Gadishagoda police station. She has also approached the State Women’s Commission seeking justice. However, the woman alleged that no concrete action has been taken so far.

The family members of the woman alleged that they are being warned by some villagers not to continue living in the village

The woman said that if she does not get justice and the matter is not resolved, she may take an extreme step.
