Bhubaneswar: Large parts of Odisha are set to experience intense heatwave and hot and humid weather conditions over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing Red, Orange and Yellow warnings for multiple districts across the state.
According to the weather agency, severe heatwave conditions accompanied by warm nights are likely to persist in western Odisha districts, while coastal and southern regions may continue to reel under uncomfortable hot and humid weather.
Red Alert for Sambalpur, Balangir and Boudh
For May 25, the IMD has issued a Red Warning for Sambalpur and Balangir districts, where both heatwave and warm night conditions are very likely at isolated places. Boudh district is also under Red Alert for severe heatwave conditions.
The same Red Warning will remain in force on May 26 and May 27 for Sambalpur, Balangir and Boudh districts.
Orange Alert in Several Western Odisha Districts
An Orange Alert has been sounded for Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Kalahandi and Nuapada districts from May 25 to May 27 due to likely heatwave conditions.
On May 28, Sambalpur, Boudh and Balangir districts will remain under Orange Warning for heatwave conditions.
Hot and Humid Weather Likely in Coastal Odisha
The IMD has warned of hot and humid conditions at isolated places in several coastal and southern districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam and Gajapati.
The warning also covers districts such as Jajpur, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur for the next few days.
Yellow Warning for Heatwave in Interior Districts
Yellow Warnings for heatwave conditions have been issued for Kandhamal, Bargarh and a few adjoining districts on different days between May 25 and May 29.
On May 29, heatwave conditions are likely to continue over Sambalpur, Boudh, Balangir, Sonepur and Jharsuguda districts, while hot and humid weather may persist in several coastal belts.
The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated and take precautionary measures, especially during afternoon hours, as extreme temperatures and humid conditions may cause heat-related illnesses.
