Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Sri Lanka coast under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

According to the IMD, the system formed at 5.30 am on May 11. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. The weather system is likely to intensify further and become more marked during the next 48 hours.

Despite the formation of the low pressure area, there is no immediate concern for Odisha. The IMD has not issued any warning or forecast regarding the system’s impact on the state so far.

Weather experts also indicated that the system is unlikely to have any significant effect on Odisha’s weather conditions.
