Paralakhemundi: A large-scale destruction of forest has come to light in the Kichiling Reserved Forest area of Odisha's Gajapati district, raising serious concerns among environmentalists and locals. Acres of forest land have allegedly been set on fire after the cutting of valuable trees, leading to significant damage to the region’s biodiversity and ecological balance.
According to reports, several valuable timber species, including red sandalwood, sal, teak and other forest trees, were cut down inside the reserved forest. As per allegations, fire was deliberately set in the area to erase evidence of the illegal tree felling.
The incident has also raised questions about the functioning of the Forest Department. Locals are questioning how such extensive tree felling and burning could take place inside a protected forest area without the knowledge of Forest officials. Others have alleged possible negligence and demanded accountability from the authorities responsible for safeguarding the forest.
What has further intensified the controversy is the fact that a forest beat house is located close to the affected site. In addition, a 24-hour surveillance system is in place to protect the special red sandalwood plantation in the area. Despite these arrangements, the large-scale destruction has left many surprised.
Intellectuals and environmental activists have called for a high-level investigation into the matter. They have demanded an impartial inquiry to identify those responsible for the tree felling, determine the motive behind the fire, and ascertain whether any forest mafia or illegal timber network was involved in the incident.
