Bhubaneswar: The police today arrested two more persons in connection with the brutal assault on a young couple in Odisha’s Berhampur city on May 18.

The two accused have been identified as Ashish Sahu and Dinesh Kumar Panda, said Berhampur Town police.

So far, the police have arrested four persons in connection with the assault on Umesh Rath and his female friend Gayatri Patra in the Silk City.

The cops had nabbed two accused, identified as Lingaraj Samal and Raj Malhotra, on Wednesday while prime accused Mukesh Sahu was injured in a police encounter in Berhampur in the wee hours today.

“Ashish is the brother of prime accused Mukesh Sahu. He was arrested after he surrendered before the Town police today. The four arrested persons have been produced in a local court,” said a police officer.

As per reports, a group of miscreants waylaid Umesh and his female friend while they were travelling on a bike at Giri Road in Berhampur around 8.30 pm on May 18. They allegedly attacked the couple with sticks in full public view. A video of the incident later went viral on social media.

Umesh sustained grievous injuries in the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for better treatment.

According to the cops, the miscreants attacked Umesh over past enmity.
