Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Tuesday praised former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu for his visionary leadership and enduring contributions to nation-building while attending the launch of a coffee table book on him.

Speaking at the event in Bhubaneswar, the Governor said while some leaders are remembered for the positions they held, a select few are remembered for the ideas they champion and the values they uphold. “Suresh Prabhu belongs to this rare category of leaders,” he remarked.

Congratulating the book’s editor, Sabyasachee Dash, the Governor said the publication aptly captures Prabhu’s four-decade-long public life and his contributions to policymaking and governance across multiple sectors. He emphasised the book is not merely a collection of photographs and memories, but a tribute to a life dedicated to public service and national development.

Recalling his association with Prabhu since 2002, Kambhampati highlighted his role as Chairman of the Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers, constituted during the NDA government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He noted the initiative laid the foundation for addressing India’s water management challenges through an ambitious river-linking programme.

The Governor also highlighted Prabhu’s 26-year parliamentary career and his stewardship of key ministries, including Power, Railways, Commerce and Industry, and Civil Aviation. He noted several reform measures introduced during Prabhu’s tenure as Railway Minister enhanced transparency, improved efficiency, and upgraded passenger services through greater use of technology.

He further underscored Prabhu’s contributions to energy policy, international trade, and global diplomacy, and commended his role as India’s representative at forums such as the G20 and G7.

“His life is an exemplary model of integrity, innovation, and unwavering commitment to national interest,” the Governor said.

The book to inspire future generations

Expressing hope, he added that the coffee table book would inspire future generations by documenting the achievements and values of a leader who has significantly contributed to India’s development journey.

Speaking on the occasion, Suresh Prabhu thanked the Governor for his presence and recalled their long-standing association. He also praised Odisha’s development trajectory, noting that the state holds immense growth potential due to its abundant natural resources.

Former State Information Commissioner Jagadananda and Rajiv Sahu, Chairman of the Odisha Chapter of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), also addressed the gathering. The programme began with a welcome address by Sabyasachi Das, editor of the coffee table book.
