Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has directed all departments to ensure that eligible officers obtain exempted FASTags for their vehicles in view of the Centre’s proposed rollout of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system on National Highways.
According to an official letter issued by the Commerce and Transport Department on May 12, 2026, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) plans to implement the MLFF tolling system across all four-lane and above National Highways in a phased manner within the next year.
The letter has been addressed to Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and Commissioner-cum-Secretaries of all departments.
As per the communication, the new toll collection system will use gantry-mounted high-performance RFID readers along with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. The move is aimed at enabling seamless toll collection without stopping vehicles at toll plazas.
The state government said officers and all eligible users entitled to toll exemption under Rule 11 of the National Highways Fee Rules should obtain exempted FASTags for their vehicles at the earliest.
The letter further stated that officials using government vehicles not covered under the exempted category, or those using private vehicles, may be encouraged to adopt FASTag Annual Passes.
The proposed MLFF tolling system is expected to gradually replace the conventional toll plaza mechanism and facilitate smoother traffic movement on major highways across the country.
