Badamba: Police arrested a homeopathy doctor while carrying out illegal abortion in Badamba locality in Odisha's Cuttack district. A woman was rescued in a critical, bleeding condition during a police raid near Sunapal Bazaar on Friday.
Accused identified as unqualified practitioner
The accused, identified as Jayant Bastia, was allegedly operating as a fake doctor. Though reportedly a homeopathy practitioner, he did not possess any valid certification to run a medical clinic or perform such procedures.
Illegal clinic running for over a decade
Police investigations revealed that the illegal abortion clinic had been operating for nearly 12 years. Bastia allegedly conducted abortions throughout the day and night, even preparing patients in advance. Authorities also suspect that sex determination tests were being carried out using a machine at the facility.
Police conducted decoy operation
The raid was led by Sub-Inspector Biswa Bandita Sahoo, who posed as a patient seeking an abortion to gather evidence. The operation led to Bastia being caught red-handed.
Medical equipment seized, case registered
Police seized several medical instruments from the clinic, including a manually operated suction machine, surgical dilators, operation tools, injections, and medicines. Badamba police have registered a case (No. 141/2026), and an investigation is underway under the supervision of IIC Paramananda Nayak.
Authorities are now probing whether more individuals were involved in the illegal activities and if similar clinics are operating in the region.
