Rourkela: Odisha has become completely Maoist-free after nearly three decades of insurgency, Director General of Police (DGP) Y. B. Khurania said on Friday.
Addressing mediapersons after attending a medal award ceremony at the Civic Centre in Rourkela, the DGP termed it a “significant milestone” for the state police and security forces. The event was organised by the Western Range Police, where personnel were honoured for their distinguished service.
Security forces maintain vigil along interstate borders
Khurania said that while Maoist activities have been eliminated within Odisha, the presence of extremists in neighbouring states remains a concern. He added that Odisha Police and other security agencies are maintaining strict vigil along interstate border areas to prevent any resurgence.
Describing it as a major achievement after years of sustained operations, the DGP noted that the end of Maoist influence marks a new phase for policing in the state.
Cybercrime emerges as new challenge for police
However, he cautioned that cybercrime has now emerged as a major challenge. Sharing details of recent operations, Khurania said that more than 45,000 bank accounts were scrutinised during cybercrime drives conducted between January and February. Notices were issued to over 7,000 individuals, and around 350 cybercriminals were arrested.
He also said that awareness campaigns are being intensified to educate the public about online fraud and digital safety.
In a significant step to strengthen enforcement, the DGP announced that dedicated cybercrime and economic offences units will be set up in all major district offices within the next year.
Anti-drug campaign to continue for next three years
He said that the efforts are underway to make drug-free Odisha over the next three years.
"Odisha Police has launched a campaign since April 1, 2026 for drug-free Odisha. The anti-drug campaign will continue across the state for the next three years as part of ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse," he added.
