Puri: A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain tore the sacred Patitapabana Bana atop the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Thursday. The holy flag, mounted on the temple’s Nilachakra, was damaged due to the intense weather conditions, a servitor said today.
As per temple traditions, Chunara Sevayats hoist the Patitapabana Bana on the Nilachakra every afternoon before the Sandhya Dhupa ritual. The practice is a daily offering and holds deep religious significance. According to established customs, even the presence of a small or symbolic flag ensures the continuity and sanctity of rituals dedicated to Lord Jagannath.
No disruption to daily rituals at Srimandir
Despite the damage, there has been no disruption in the temple’s daily niti-kanti (ritual schedule). All rituals have been conducted smoothly since morning, sources said.
Such incidents are not uncommon, as strong winds have previously caused the flag to tear or be blown away.
Kite spotted on Akshaya Danda after storm
Meanwhile, after the flag was torn, a kite was seen perched on the temple’s Akshaya Danda. Such sightings are often reported during stormy weather, when birds hover around and occasionally settle atop the Nilachakra. The bird later flew away after remaining there for some time.
Temple authorities are monitoring the situation, while devotees have been reassured as rituals continue without any hindrance.
