Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a traditional Tala Pattachitra from Odisha to Queen Sonja during his diplomatic outreach to Norway, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage and centuries-old artistic traditions on the global stage.
What makes Palm Leaf Pattachitra unique?
Popularly known as Tala Pattachitra or Talapatra art, the ancient craft is among Odisha’s most intricate and revered art forms. Unlike conventional cloth-based Pattachitra paintings, the artwork is meticulously engraved on specially treated palm leaves sourced from the Palmyra tree. The art form is celebrated for its extraordinary precision, intricate detailing, and narrative storytelling rooted in Indian mythology and classical traditions.
Palm Leaf Pattachitra often appears as foldable strips or panels stitched together with thread, combining visual storytelling, calligraphy, and sacred iconography into a single artistic expression. The organic texture of the palm leaves and the painstaking craftsmanship reflect generations of artistic excellence preserved by Odisha’s artisan communities.
To prepare Tala Pattachitra, artisans carefully select palm leaves and treat them with turmeric and neem mixtures to protect them from pests before drying them under the sun. Using a fine iron stylus known as a “lekhani,” artists etch delicate lines onto the stiff surface. Natural lampblack or kohl is then rubbed into the grooves to make the designs visible, while some artworks are further enhanced using mineral and vegetable-based colours.
PM Modi returned to India after concluding a five-nation diplomatic tour covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy between May 15 and May 20.
The visit focused on strengthening India’s strategic and economic partnerships with key global nations. During his Italy visit, India and Italy elevated their bilateral relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership and set an ambitious target to expand bilateral trade to €20 billion by 2029.
India and Italy also signed agreements in areas including agriculture, prevention of financial crimes, and mobility opportunities for Indian healthcare professionals. PM Modi’s discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni further advanced cooperation on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
