Jharsuguda: Two notorious criminals were injured in a late-night police encounter near Karlakhaman under Belpahar police limits in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Monday.

The injured have been identified as Babu Banchhor and Chand Banchhor. Both sustained bullet injuries to their legs and are stated to be in stable condition.

According to reports, the two are the prime accused in the murder of Rahul Mahato that took place in Belpahar on Monday. Both accused are residents of the One-R Colony area under the Burla police limits.

Police said the accused were trying to flee towards the Kanika area in neighbouring Sundargarh district after the murder. Acting on a tip-off, a police team chased them near Karlakhaman.

During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police team first. However, no police personnel were injured in the firing. In retaliation, police fired back, injuring both the accused.

The injured criminals were later admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Further investigation into the case is underway.
