Bhubaneswar: A youth allegedly ended his life in the Baliapatna area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar city today over his father's liquor addiction.

The deceased has been identified as Shiv Prasad Sahu, son of Raj Kishore Sahu of Basantadihi village under Guapur panchayat in the Baliapatna area. He was a Plus Three Final-Year Arts student at Shishu Ananta Mahavidyalaya in Baliapatna.

According to reports, Shiv allegedly hanged himself inside his family’s snack shop located at Mahavir Chhak in Turintira under Baliapatna police limits.

Shiv’s father, Raj Kishore, had been running the snack shop for several years, and the family depended on the income generated from it. However, he was allegedly addicted to alcohol and often spent a major portion of the earnings on liquor, leading to frequent family disputes and financial hardship.

Family members and locals claimed Shiv had repeatedly requested his father to stop drinking, but his appeals allegedly went unheard. The situation reportedly left the youth mentally distressed for a long time.

On Thursday morning, Shiv was helping his father at the shop as usual. After business hours, his father reportedly went to a salon for a haircut while Shiv went to a nearby bank to deposit money.

While returning from the bank around noon, Shiv saw his father consuming liquor in the market again. Unable to cope with the situation, he reportedly took the extreme step at around 1 pm by hanging himself inside the shop.

When Raj Kishore returned, he found the shop locked from the inside and Shiv’s slippers lying outside. The door was later broken open, and Shiv was rescued in a critical condition.

He was first shifted to Baliapatna Community Health Centre in an 108 ambulance and later referred to Capital Hospital. However, he could not survive.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
