Angul: Panic gripped locals after two persons sustained serious injuries following a firing incident during a wedding procession in Odisha's Angul district on Monday. The incident took place in Belpunji village under Athmallik police limits late in the night. 

As per reports, a wedding party had arrived from Boudh district for a marriage ceremony. The groom’s procession was underway with celebration and music when gunshots were suddenly fired, triggering chaos among those present.

Two persons from the Manamunda area sustained serious injuries in the incident. One of the victims suffered a bullet injury to his right leg, while the other was hit in the right hand. Both injured persons were immediately rushed to the Boudh hospital for treatment.

Accused was part of the wedding procession

Sources said the person who allegedly opened fire was also part of the wedding party and hailed from Boudh. The exact motive behind behind the firing is yet to be established.On receiving information, Athmallik police reached the spot and launched an investigation. "We are trying to identify the circumstances under which the weapon was used and whether it was accidental or deliberate. Further action will be taken after the probe and statements of eyewitnesses are completed," they said.

Meanwhile, the incident has created fear and tension in the locality.
