Rourkela: The parking facilities built around the world’s largest seated hockey stadium, the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, have reportedly turned into dumping spots.

The stadium, which earned a place in the Guinness World Records and brought global recognition to Rourkela, is now facing an embarrassing civic issue. Several dedicated parking zones developed for the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup have fallen into disuse and are increasingly being used for open garbage disposal.

Around seven parking areas were constructed at different locations to accommodate the large influx of spectators during the Hockey World Cup. While these facilities served their purpose during the international tournament, they have remained largely unused since then. Residents allege that the parking sites have not received adequate cleaning or maintenance, allowing heaps of waste to accumulate over time.

The situation is reportedly similar across multiple parking locations, including those near Stadium Gate No. 6 and opposite the airport. However, Parking Zone No. 7 near Pradhanpali has emerged as a major concern. Large mounds of garbage have accumulated at the site, while stagnant water in several places has created pond-like conditions.

Locals claim that the absence of regular cleaning has led to foul odours and a sharp rise in mosquito breeding. They have also expressed concern over the lack of immediate action by the Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) to clear the waste and restore cleanliness in the area.

The issue has gained significance as the RMC is currently participating in the national Swachh Survekshan rankings and is striving to improve its sanitation credentials. Critics, however, argue that the city's cleanliness initiatives appear confined to official records and social media campaigns, while longstanding garbage accumulation in several parts of the city remains unaddressed.

Residents have urged the civic administration to take immediate measures to remove the waste, maintain the parking facilities, and preserve the city's image as an emerging international sports destination.
