Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone 'Arnab' has caused flooding in several parts of Odisha’s Ganjam district, leaving villages submerged, disrupting road connectivity and trapping residents in waterlogged areas.
Sorada has been among the worst-affected areas, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall continuing for the past three days. The rising water level of the Rushikulya river has led to a flood-like situation in the town and nearby villages, leaving several areas inundated and many residents stranded.
Floodwater has entered several villages in Sorada block, including Palakatu, Nuagaon, Tatabali and Suramani. Connectivity to Sorada has also been disrupted, causing difficulties for residents and commuters.
Authorities are on alert as the water level of the Rushikulya river continues to rise. At Asika, the river is flowing at more than seven feet, close to its danger level of seven feet and six inches.
People living in low-lying areas and near the river have been advised to remain cautious, avoid approaching the river and refrain from travelling through flooded stretches.
Digapahandi, Sanakhemundi Also Hit
Digapahandi has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past two days, triggering flooding in villages and inundating houses and roads. Several areas in Digapahandi, Sanakhemundi, Chikiti and Patrapur have been affected.
The water level of the Ghodahada river has risen following the heavy rainfall. Floodwater has entered Palaspur village in Sanakhemundi block, where water is flowing around four feet above the Palaspur bridge. Floodwater has also started entering the riverside village, while inundated roads have disrupted movement.
The road connecting Digapahandi with Asika has also been flooded, affecting transportation in the area.
Evacuation Process Initiated
In view of the worsening situation, the block administration has initiated steps to evacuate people from villages facing the threat of flooding and move them to safer locations.
The disruption of road connectivity between Berhampur and Gajapati district has emerged as a major concern. Waterlogging on the connecting road has brought traffic to a complete halt.
